Air conditioners are becoming ubiquitous in Indian households, especially with temperatures rising each year. It is a good time to purchase a new air conditioner, or to upgrade from your old model to help withstand the upcoming summer months. When purchasing a new air conditioner, among the first things we notice is the star rating on each unit, or product label. The star rating of an AC helps in estimating its energy efficiency, which is given by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE).

They take into account things like increasing airflow, surface area of copper tubes, and compressor efficiency while providing the ratings. The higher the AC units score on these parameters, the higher is the star rating. The star rating is calculated using ISEER, or Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. This is the total annual amount of heat that the AC unit can remove from the indoor air while in operation, to the energy consumed by the AC unit during the same period. There are 5 types of star ratings given by BEE.

  1. 5-Star Rating: A 5-star AC is the most energy efficient, and the ISEER is above 4.50.
  2. 4-Star Rating: These air conditioners will have an ISEER between 4.00 to 4.50.
  3. 3-Star Rating: A 3-star AC unit will have an ISEER rating between 3.50 to 3.99, and is among the best options to choose from, when considering the energy efficiency and the price.
  4. 2-Star Rating: These ACs have an ISEER between 3.30 and 3.49.
  5. 1-Star Rating: A 1-star AC will consume the most power in order to cool down the room. Its ISEER will range between 3.10 to 3.29.

Now that you have understood the ratings given to each AC unit, you can make an informed decision while purchasing an air conditioner. Some of the best, energy efficient ACs available in the market today include:

  1. Voltas 5 Star 1.5 Ton Window AC
  2. Carrier 5 Star 1.5 Ton Window AC
  3. LG 3 Star 2 Ton Split AC (KS-Q24ENXA)
  4. Voltas 1.2 Ton 3-Star Split AC (153V DZV)
  5. Carrier 1 Ton 3 Star Split AC (Ester Neo CAS12ES3R39F0)

You can opt to use the Bajaj Finserv EMI Network Card to buy the most energy efficient ACs in the market. The EMI Network Card comes with instant loan approval of up to Rs. 4 lakh. Furthermore, it can be used at over 1 lakh partner stores, located across 1,900+ cities in the country.
